The Merchant Who Couldn’t Escape His Shadow
There was once a wealthy merchant in Varanasi who had everything — gold, land, a beautiful family, respect in society. Yet every night, the same nightmare visited him: a dark figure chasing him through endless corridors, always catching him just before dawn.
He consulted astrologers, performed elaborate pujas, donated generously to temples. Nothing changed.
Finally, an old sadhu by the Ganga told him something that shattered his understanding:
“You cannot outrun your shadow, merchant. It is attached to you. But stand directly under the sun of awareness — and watch it disappear beneath your feet.”
The merchant didn’t understand immediately. But years later, after losing his fortune, then rebuilding it, after burying his parents and blessing his grandchildren, after a lifetime of joy and sorrow — he finally stood still long enough to see.
The shadow wasn’t chasing him. He had been running from himself.
This is the story of Karma. Not punishment. Not reward. Just the soul learning to stand still in the light.
